Class Commentary: 08-01-23

It's funny how the last couple times I've seen Mary Tuma she recognized me as taking a Fibers 1 with Guita Melki, otherwise we have never really any conversations or other communications.

Her idea that she could never call herself an artist because she was unworthy is an interesting concept. Then she realized it was ridiculous not to call herself an artist, so from then on it changed. This is what I stated on a previous entry, "I do not consider myself an artist and likely never will consider it." At this time when I state this there is no thought that it is because I am unworthy. But thinking back into my past there is perhaps a portion that thought this to be true. When explaining to someone that I was attending school for art there would always be comments like "so what do you like to paint or draw" or " you do sculpture, so what is your favorite material wood, clay...?" This was a horrible attempt to connect by using something they think they understand to facilitate, bad idea. All that was ever gained by me was alienation. This display of how everyone goes about their day and is mostly isolated is disheartening. No one really knows what an artist is unless they say they do.

P.S.
How many people were shocked by the Serrano and Mapplethorpe pictures? It was slightly funny to me because it was rather old hat. How many people have Mapplethorpe pictures of lillies in their houses and have no idea what else he used as subject matter? I don't.

yeah, lots were not only shocked, but mentioned that the work should be illegal. none of those images are cutting edge at all anymore.
